The Chinese govt attempts to regulate AI and it is one of the most lucrative approaches towards AI governance

Artificial intelligence has clearly emerged as one of the most transformational technologies in the history of tech evolution. AI has helped the world explore the universe, tackle complex problems and chronic diseases, formulate new medicines for novel viruses, and develop advanced weapons that can be used in warfare. These intelligent systems continue to penetrate every industrial sector, as it offers avant-garde business opportunities and improved efficiency in operations. But global organizations have accepted the fact that AI regulations are critical for the well-being of humankind. Recently, China released its proposed laws to regulate AI for good, and use its potential to the entirety for national and international purposes.

Back in late August 2021, China’s internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), released draft guidelines that seek to regulate the use of algorithmic recommender systems by internet information services. Experts said those guidelines are thus by far the most comprehensive efforts taken up by any nation to regulate AI. China’s approach includes some of the best global practices around algorithmic system regulation. The country is well-known for leveraging AI and face recognition technologies for leveraging AI for mass surveillance, even though it is quite tempting to view these initiatives, it screams human rights abuses on a national level.

Recent approaches by the Chinese government indicate the arrival of various approaches to regulate AI governance, each chosen by a different bunch of the Chinese bureaucracy, and each at a different level of security. Experts say that it is worth examining these approaches since they will drastically affect how the countries complement and compete with each other. China’s initiative towards regulating artificial intelligence technologies can literally have a diverse effect on international relations with other countries.

From March 1, it is expected that the Chinese government will outlaw any kind of algorithmic discrimination as a part of what may be the world’s most ambitious artificial intelligence project. Under these rules, companies will be forbidden to use any personal information to offer users different prices for a product or service. These regulations will definitely have a crackdown on China’s most expensive and valuable tech companies that has included big fines and neglected stock offerings.

Some of these provisions also aim to address complaints about online services. Some elements of these provisions may seem harsh or difficult to impose, but it can also be technically challenging for technicians to monitor and control the behaviour of an algorithm.

The year 2022 will be an eventful year for the Chinese Government. Its attempts to rule over machine algorithms become successful, and the regulators and policymakers can imbue these techniques with technical and regulatory mild power that could control and shape AI governance across the globe of various platforms.
